People are weird creatures. Well, I can’t speak for you all, but I know that I am wired funky. Case in point: Nothing makes me feel better, and enjoy life more than challenging myself. Any day that I have ground myself to powder before dinner is a good day.

Walk it Off

Hi, my name is Mr. Heartland on FIRE, and I love long walks on the beach. Pretty corny, I know…. But seriously. I love walking. The beach is preferred, but totally optional.

Lifestyle optimization is a powerful tool on the path to Financial Independence (FI) . It means to focus your life’s resources (time, money, etc.) doing things you love, while trying to cut out those things you don’t.

For me, walking is one of the activities I’ve been working to incorporate more of into my life. Let me tell you why.

Being Early: The Simplest Success Hack

A few weeks ago, my wife and I were on vacation in San Francisco. We had an ambitious schedule so we arrived to pick up our rental car for the trip early in the morning. The lady working the counter tossed us the keys and proclaimed: “You’re in luck… this is our last car.” She went on to tell us that several groups were due in shortly and they wouldn’t behave cars available for 3 to 4 hours!

Yikes! A delay that long would have nuked our vacation plans. How lucky were we?

Upon reflection; however, it seems this wasn’t an isolated incident. The common thread between this “lucky” event and several others was a supremely simple hack…
